Short Biography
I am an advocate of the High Court of Kenya having graduated with an LLM (University of Bristol) LLB (University of Nairobi). I have over 15 years experience as a judicial officer in the Kenyan Judiciary where I presided over both criminal and civil cases. I also worked as a Deputy Registrar of the High Court and was in charge of training for both judicial and non judicial staff.
I have over 20 years teaching and examining experience at the Kenya School of Law (Criminal Procedure) University of Nairobi (Labour, Human Rights, Criminology and Penology, Access to Justice) as well as supervision of both undergraduate and post graduate students.
I have extensive experience in Human Rights practice including working as a Commissioner/Chairperson of the Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights. During this period I was engaged in the practical application of human rights principles and standards at both policy and implementation levels.
I also served as the Secretary/Vice President of the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions. During my tenure we dealt with various investigations of human rights violations at the national level. Additionally I was involved in various meetings with UN treaty bodies and agencies; our main areas of concern were the relationship between the international, regional and national mechanisms in the protection and promotion of human rights. I was also engaged very significantly in the discussions on the Ruggie Principles, in particular how local mechanisms could be involved in their implementation.
I have also had extensive experience and engagement in legal, judicial and security sector reforms in Kenya.
I currently teach at the University of Nairobi; I am a member of the International Commission of Jurists (Kenya, Chapter) and FIDA (Kenya) (International Federation of Women Lawyers).
